This year
marks a hugely important point for the Handsworth group- our Diamond
anniversary. 60 years is
a huge amount of time for any organisation, but for one run by volunteers-
people who give up their time because they see the value in what we do and
enjoy their time helping others- is just incredible.
As a Scout myself
as a child volunteering is a chance to pay back those who gave me some of the
happiest childhood memories I have. Scouting activities have also helped bring
me closer to my family as I persuaded them to get involved and the extra time
with them is absolutely precious to me.
I have also
through Scouting acquired a whole new family in two very different senses. Firstly,
I have a Scouting family, a term we see thrown around a lot, but fiercely
personal to me- great friends who I have had some incredible experiences with.
Secondly, I have a very literal family through Scouting as it was here I met my
wife, her family (who are also Scouters) and we are about to have our first
baby together.
Scouting
has done incredible things for me, but the question is what has it or can it do
for you? September is
our family camp and should be one of the highlights of the year. I hope many of
you will take the opportunity to come and have a taste of the adventure for yourselves-
to see what we do and what our young people do.
I hope to
see you there.
